Haurchefant is the illegitimate son of Count Edmont de Fortemps. Though Haurchefant grew up in his father's household, the two were not close, and as an illegitimate child, his relationship with his stepmother was strained. Haurchefant met Francel de Haillenarte at the age of twelve outside of a party at Fortemps Manor, which the countess had banned him from attending. Five years later, Haurchefant rescued Francel from a trio of kidnappers while wielding only a knife and using his bare forearm to block an arrow. Performing this act of bravery earned the young Elezen his knighthood.[1]

Haurchefant forwarded an invitation from his father to the Warrior of Light and the Scions, granting them entry to Ishgard. Lord Haurchefant introduced the three Scions to his family: Father Edmont de Fortemps, and his half-brothers Artoirel de Fortemps and Emmanellain de Fortemps. While assisting the two brothers, the Warrior of Light learned that Lord Haurchefant was Edmont's illegitimate son, but was treated with the same respect and responsibilities as a trueborn. However, the knights of the Heavens' Ward called Lord Haurchefant a bastard.
Once the truth behind the Dragonsong War was revealed and Ser Aymeric was captured by the Heavens' Ward, Haurchefant joined the rescue effort despite his father's protest. Fighting through the Heavens' Ward alongside Alphinaud and the Warrior, he arrived at the top of the Vault to apprehend Archbishop Thordan VII to answer for his crimes. The Warrior of Light and Haurchefant chased the retreating archbishop and knights. Haurchefant noticed a spear of light thrown at the Warrior of Light by Ser Zephirin, and jumped in to block it with his shield. The shield broke and the spear impaled Haurchefant, allowing Thordan VII to escape. Alphinaud raced to heal him, but the fatal wound refused to mend[note 1]. Relieved to see his friend unharmed, Haurchefant asked the Warrior of Light to smile with his dying breath as a smile better suited a hero. The Warrior smiled and Haurchefant passed away.
His loss was felt by many, especially by his father Count Edmont de Fortemps. He attempted to keep his composure by saying, "A knight lives to serve. To protect. To sacrifice. There is no greater calling..." but ultimately collapsed in grief. The Warrior of Light later saw Count Edmont, who would help him or her with their mission despite his grief, as it was what Haurchefant would have wanted. Count Edmont gifted Haurchefant's broken shield to the Warrior of Light before their departure to apprehend the archbishop. The Warrior laid it upon his memorial at Providence Point.
In the following years to come Ferris would establish a strong sense of loyalty and devotion towards Crusch for taking him from the hell that was his life before and base part of his new identity on that relationship. He also came to befriend Fourier Lugnica a little while after the prince met Crusch. Together 3 would get into all kinds of mischief that defined much of their friendship.
At age 18, Ferris would join the Royal Guard under recommendations from Fourier and Royal Institute of Healing. Although he wanted to be of better use to Crusch, Ferris at first was not very comfortable in being the elite group for several reasons, he stood out due to his odd features marking him as a Demi-Human, his preference for wearing women's clothing, his own lacking combat abilities and lastly dissatisfaction of his unusual and sudden appointment despite all that from the other knights. However, on the first day, he also came to be acquainted with Reinhard van Astrea and Julius Juukulius which would be the first step in breaking the wall between Ferris and his new environment. Through his good relationship with both of them and the subtle opportunities to display his worth crafty granted by Marcos Gildark, Ferris would come to earn the respect of the other knights for saving their lives with his magic. This would come to give him a sense of his abilities and place there.
After the incident, Fourier would collapse from a mysterious illness and Ferris would spend over a month looking after him. Desperate and frustrated at the lack of progress, Ferris would consider using the Sacrament of the Immortal King to revive him after death but Fourier would forbid it, as he wanted to be allowed to die on his own terms if that was the case. They share a sombre heart to heart moment and Fourier would pass away a couple of days later. On that same day, Ferris would take his oath of knighthood to Crusch to support her and Fourier's memory.
In the 2016 run written by Jeff Lemire and drawn by Greg Smallwood, Khonsu initially appears to be a well-meaning benefactor to Marc, guiding him through a twisted New York controlled by the Egyptian god Seth and his army of monsters. However, as Marc gradually begins to reconnect with his old friends over the course of his quest, Khonshu begins to turn aggressive, berating Marc for not focusing on the mission. 2ff7e9595c
