Ultimate General: Gettysburg was the first game of the series, which allows players to lead thousands of soldiers in the Battle of Gettysburg.[2] According to the developers, the game is unique in "Giving you the chance to be the General of either the Union or Confederate army in the battle of Gettysburg, it allows you to recreate the historical facts or try out many speculative scenarios."[3] It first became available in Steam Early Access on 12 June 2014, and was fully released on 15 October 2014[4] The game has been updated since release and the latest version, Patch 1.7, was released on 15 July 2016.[5]

The game claims to have accurate maps utilising satellite images and historical charts. Additional game-play features include Custom Battles, where different AI Commanders and the multi-day battles provide replayability. There are also additional custom battles where players can unlock a large number of speculative scenarios that can be played as quick battles, either randomised or with full unit strength and default army deployments. There is also a Multiplayer Experience in which the game has 18 maps for one-on-one matches.[3]

There are differences between the iPad and the computer versions. The game was redesigned to provide usability and playability on tablets, and the user interface was reworked. The campaign here is replaced by 10 missions for each side, and multiplayer is not available.

Ultimate General: Civil War, unlike Gettysburg, offers a campaign system that covers the whole American Civil War from 1861-1865, including historical battles, units and events. The game was released on 16 November 2016 in Steam Early Access.[6] As an early access version, the game was regularly updated, and a "completed version" of the game was released on 14 July 2017.[7] The "final" version of the game, Patch 1.10, was released on 18 May 2018.[5]

Ultimate General: Gettysburg includes the full order of battle for the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Unit sizes range from the small artillery batteries to vast infantry brigades with cavalry and skirmishers in between.All brigades have troop numbers and differing competencies based on historical facts. Additionally, all artillery battery numbers and types are correctly simulated. Lastly, major generals and officers actively participate in the battlefield to organize and support the armies and will also appear in after action battle reports to help you monitor battle progress.

Before we enter the Early-Access phase, we needed to fix major inconsistencies, instabilities and bugs. For this reason, we invited more volunteer testers to assist us by play testing. Going on early-access release on November 16, 2016 before being fully released on July 14, 2017, the core of the game consists of fighting individual combats portraying a variety of actual battles throughout The American Civil War in real-time while managing their armies’ troops and weapons with the money, recruits and reputation available to them between the battles. Additionally, players can play singular battles against the computer following a historical format for them or allowing the player to customize and build their own army for fighting the battle.

Arguably the hardest of hardcore wargames, Command: Modern Operations is the pinnacle of attention to detail, accurate simulation, and wide range of scale in any simulation wargame. The Command series of strategy games is basically if Google Earth was turned into the ultimate war simulator.

For something more modern, Cold Waters takes the player to the deep and hostile waters of a Cold War-gone-hot scenario, as they command a submarine to complete a variety of missions and fight a slew of ships. If naval combat in general is uncommon in strategy gaming, then wargames on submarine warfare are even more niche and hard to come by.

This incredible authenticity does come at the cost of a steep learning curve and the nature of submarine warfare means Cold Waters will have extensive periods of momentum killing down time and may create the feeling that such complicated warfare is actionless and boring. As a complete package, though, Cold Waters successfully portrays the engrossing and gripping dynamics of a high-tech cat-and-mouse game that will make any player feel like the most accomplished unseen hunter.

**Differences with the PC versionThe game was redesigned from the ground up to provide good usability and playability on tablets. If you have played the game on the PC, the major change is in the campaign flow and in the user interface. The tactical combat and its features were tuned only slightly.
